Mirroring is a very interesting concept and makes for an excellent topic of discussion as it is open to so wide an interpretation of what is and what isn’t mirroring.
So, what is mirroring? It is the concept that whatever we perceive in the world is really whatever is going on within each of us. So, as you read this, it is really a mirror of what is going on inside your head. As someone else reads it, it mirrors what is going on inside their head. As I write it, it is a mirror of what is going on inside my head, and so on.
This makes more sense when you consider that each of us sees the world through our own filter. No two people see an identical event in identical ways. There is always some difference, often quite the difference. The Arabs and Israelis for instance. Or Democrats and Republicans. Or Communists and Fascists. Each of these groups sees events similarly within their own group, a little differently from each person in their group, and generally wildly different from the people in the contrasting groups.
One corollary of this I have heard is that when someone we know commits suicide, mirroring occurs here where we wanted to kill off that part of usrepresented by that person who killed them self, wholly. Yeah, I know. Very twilight zone and disturbing that we are somehow responsible through our thoughts and feelings for someone elses self demise. Especially when we consider that we each have right of choice, and that other person made their choice on their own… right? So, how can they both mirror our thoughts and feelings, especially when we may have loved that person, and have the independent, inalienable right of choice, and still be mirroring our thought to have that part of us killed off?
Is it like the Law of Attraction? The LOA either is always working or is never working. It is the law or it is fantasy. I believe it is Law and is always in effect.
The law of choice is always in effect, at least when one is beyond infancy, and maybe even during infancy. Some believe we incarnate and choose our parents and life, even before birth, perhaps.
What about mirroring? Is everything a mirror? How could some things be a mirror and not others? And if everything is a mirror, how can the right of others to choice be coexistent with them being mirrors of us (hence their choice occurs within us)? Is it because of our perception, that is how we choose to perceive the events external to us that their choice is also coincidentally made within us? Would love some thoughts on this… to me, it is very much like the time travel paradox. Okay, time travel may or may not be possible, personally, I believe we cannot go back and change anything, anything that happened, happened the only way it can, because it has happened. And, going forward, by living in the moment, we can make the future different. But, say we could go back in time, and somehow change something in the life of our ancestors. Then we would never be born. Having never been born, we couldn’t go back in time to change anything…. so that in itself is a good argument why time travel cannot happen. But, what about mirroring? Can it be that everything is a mirror?
Most of us who have studied new age modalities know and understand the practicalities of when someone is angry with us, it is not about us, it is about them. We are a mirror for them to display their anger, which is internal to them. How though if they are mirrors for us, does this make us choose to be a mirror for them, who are using us as a mirror for their anger? That is what kind of mirror are they for us in this instance?
Comments are going to be highly appreciated.
Peace and mirrors,

Yucel, I know you and I talked about this earlier; after re-reading today’s excellent and thought-provoking post (in particular the final paragraph dealing with the concept of mirroring in the most basic form: your example of another using us as a mirror to display their anger or frustration) I started to think about PERMISSION. The idea of permission came to mind; availability, allowing. Do we inherently grant permission for another person to use us as a mirror simply by being there? By being present for them? And, do we necessarily need permission to mirror from the other person? What if we don’t grant permission, are not available or do not allow their anger/frustration to manifest itself this way? Thoughts? Do we need permission? I think, in a true, pure friendship, this permission is a given. Never asked for, always granted inherently.
Hello Nancy, Thank you for sharing your observation. It gets to the heart of mirroring.
While they mirror us, we mirror them. And, assuming mirroring is the truth, then even if “we don’t grant permission, are not available or do not allow their anger/frustration to manifest itself ” this I believe would mean we are in fact still a mirror but a distant one. Kind of like the mirror in the other room, or maybe more accurately, a mirror which is on a car going away from the person. But still a mirror none the less. And, what if they get in a faster car and track us down? Have we by being caught given them permission? Or did we run just for them to give chase.
Recall too, if we are still taking as a given that the law of attraction is working 100% of the time. Then they being in our life is a kind of permission to co-mirror, since we created them, and they created us.
It is an excellent discussion thread.
