Love Lessons

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

— Nelson Mandela

We are each of us teachers, Bill, teaching those around us through the words we speak and the way we act. Therefore, if we are to truly make a difference in the world, the question we must ask ourselves daily is this: Am I teaching love today?

May you always be an example of love for others to follow.

Fear Is So Yesterday

Fear is always counseling you against the perils of ‘now’ because of something that happened ‘once before’.

–Robert Holden

Yesterday might be a nice place to visit, but only fear wants to live there. The next time fear calls out to you face it squarely and remind it gently that you no longer choose to live in the past and it can’t live in the present. Then bless it and let it go.

May you always be aware that fear needs the past to survive.

Living Life Unlabeled

If you feel yourself commanded by people and events, set yourself at ease. Remember the one item that is always subject to your possible control — your own clarified mind. Your mind can control everything because of its supreme power to react correctly to everything. In the Outer World people may seem to exert command over you, as with unjust taxes, but no one can control your mental reactions to outer events. Nothing in the Outer World can touch a man living fully from his Inner World.

–Vernon Howard

The circumstances in our lives are determined by our reactions to them, and as Shakespeare pointed out, “There’s nothing good nor bad but thinking makes it so.” When we consciously decide that we will not label life — that whatever is happening is neither good nor bad, but simply is — then any and every situation immediately loses its power to harm. By neutralizing the event we essentially cause the storm clouds to dissipate and in this seamless and simple way claim victory.

May you always be aware that your life is yours to control.

Fiery sermon

We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen. Sometimes the best sermons are the ones left unspoken.

A member of a church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the preacher decided to visit him.

It was a chilly evening. The preacher found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his preachers visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.

The preacher made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the preacher took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone then he sat back in his chair, still silent.

The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember’s flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The preacher glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the preacher reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, ‘Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I shall be back in church next Sunday.

I am Dedicated to Being the Best Person I Can

What does it mean to dedicate to my life? It means that the actions I take and the choices I make convey the very character and nature of divine love.

I am dedicated to living a divinely directed life. And from such a dedication, I find that I am never satisfied with doing anything less than what blesses me because I am being a blessing to others.

I act in loving ways and respond to others with understanding. As I do, I lay a foundation for living that will be a source of inspiration for the next generation to build upon.

I am dedicated to being the best person I can be. Listening to divinely inspired ideas and following the guidance I receive, I fulfill my role in life.
